How did we accrue so much debt?

Simple Answer: We went to school

Complex Answer: Our parents level of income didn't support them putting together any sort of college fund. Their answer, simply was to cash flow as much as they could. When the money ran out and we wanted to finish, we had to choose to go into debt. The fact that I really didn't want to know I wanted to be hurt me more than I expected and made me choose to add three years of state school student loans to my total.
